The Ocean Beach Recreation Center is easily one of the coolest things in this San Diego neighborhood. The OB Rec is a small building with a few rooms, a gym, an outdoor basketball court, a playground for toddlers and a softball field. Dedicated in 1950 it is one of the oldest recreation centers in San Diego.
What makes the recreation center so appealing to many locals are the leagues they host for a variety of sports including dodge ball in the gym and kickball on the outdoor softball field. It is easy to participate by signing up to join a league and get put on a team. The social team sports offered at the Ocean Beach recreation center are an awesome way to meet new people and have fun with your friends.
Inside the gym there are daily pickup basketball games. Inside the narrow gym are two very short basketball courts, which at least makes running back to play defense a lot easier on the knees for the older guys. The gym is used for a variety of community events throughout the year in Ocean Beach including hosting over 60 years of the annual Ocean Beach Kite Festival and more recently the Halloween Carnival. The wooden stage on one end is used for multiple purposes. Dance classes, gymnastics classes, tumbling classes, self defense classes, soccer, softball, flag football and even pottery is available through the recreation center.
In the staffed office, you can easily check out a huge variety of sports equipment including basketballs, Frisbees, baseball gloves and balls, kick balls, footballs, jump ropes and games for kids. You can also call to reserve the fields for large parties, athletic tournaments, sports leagues and other events. Check out the Ocean Beach Park and Recreation Program Guide for the recreation center’s upcoming events, phone numbers to contact local sports leagues, and information about the OB Rec.
