Many events take place on Newport Avenue with the corner of Newport and Abbott Street often the middle of the action. Tent stands will often set-up in the grassy area adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Park. For several annual Ocean Beach events the parking lot area at the end of Newport Avenue will be blocked off and turned into a beer garden with live music.
Parking for Ocean Beach events can be a challenge. There are many spots on the streets surrounding Newport Avenue. If you are not early you will likely end up walking five or six blocks from where you park your car. Note that some of the big events police will block off traffic on parts of streets that intersect Newport Avenue.
The Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cookoff every summer combines rocking music, delicious food and a wide-variety of street vendors to make Newport Avenue the hottest place to be in San Diego. Ocean Beach Kite Festival
The Ocean Beach Kite Festival is always in March and runs from 9 am to 4 pm at Dusty Rhodes Park. The Kite Festival is the first Saturday in March every year. You can find the exact date and check the times at the Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association calendar of events.
The annual event is a favorite for children who spend the day making kites, decorating kites and flying kites. The festival includes live music, a parade and an arts and crafts fair. Plenty of food options will satisfy every one in your group. Kite flying demonstrations happen all day long.
Age divisions begin with preschool and includes several grade school divisions, a high school division and an open division. Designing a kite that flies well and is decorated in a theme can get you noticed by the judges who will award each division based on a variety of categories.
Afterwards, head to the beach for freestyle kite flying and see spectacular tricks.
The 63rd annual Ocean Beach Kite Festival was flying high with a huge turnout on a beautiful spring day. Hundreds of neighborhood kids were seen building kites inside the OB Recreation Center and equally as many enjoying the carnival rides, games and sugar laced junk food.
Every year the Ocean Beach Kite Festival is one of the best family events in San Diego. Young kids begin the day at the Ocean Beach Recreation Center designing, building and coloring kites with the help of volunteers. Outside of the recreation center the street is blocked off and a small carnival atmosphere takes over the street. Several rides for children and small business stands selling crafts and other services are set up on the street as well to entertain the parents. After a few hours of kite building, a parade of kite holding children and their parents make their way down the street to the beach. At the beach, the children attempt to fly their self-made kites, a spectacular scene.
Easter Egg Hunt
The annual Ocean Beach Easter Egg Hunt takes place in March or April and is one of the most thrilling few minutes for kids as they join the Easter Bunny collecting eggs at Robb Field park. Bounce house, face painters, popcorn and snow cones make the morning an exciting time for many children. A couple of age groups separate the bigger kids from the toddlers. The 39th annual Easter Egg Hunt took place in April, 2014. Many thanks to the volunteers and organizers who put on this wonderful event for children.
Many of the pictures here are from the 37th annual Ocean Beach Easter Egg Hunt took place on April 7th, 2012 at Robb Field. Hundreds of children participated in the well run event that included a giant bounce for children to play on that was very popular. Add to the event unlimited free popcorn, face painting, balloon animals, and of course the colorful spring egg hunt that has been a tradition in Ocean Beach, San Diego for decades. The Easter bunny made an appearance and was a willing participant for hundreds of pictures with happy children.
The Easter egg hunt was broken up into age groups starting with the 1-2 year olds. The next age group followed 15 minutes later and so on till even the bigger little kids got their chance to find the golden egg during the hunt. That is right, there were golden eggs hidden amongst the thousands of colorful candy filled plastic eggs. If the child was lucky enough to find the golden egg he or she could turn it in for a big prize basket filled with candy, toys, sports balls and more. The younger age groups had their Easter egg hunt on the playground while the bigger kids hunted for eggs on the large grassy field.
Ocean Beach Oktoberfest is an annual event which happens every fall. The focus of Oktoberfest involves beer drinking but OB Oktoberfest offers much more than that.
Every October the German beer-garden fun rocks OB. Live music and plenty of tasty beers highlight Ocean Beach Oktoberfest. The outdoor party is located in the sectioned-off parking lot on Newport Avenue next to the beach.
The Octoberfest festival always happens in October and the hours for the event are approximately 4:30 pm until 10:00 pm. For exact dates and times, look at the Ocean Beach calendar of events.
The day begins with a 5k walk/run hosted by the Hash House Harriers. The OB Brat Trot takes participants around the streets of Ocean Beach. Registration for the run is 9am.
From 11am to 2pm the OB Pier parking lot at the end of Newport Avenue is the location for the Oktoberfest beer garden. For a $3 donation, anyone 21 years and older can enter and be treated to music and plenty of beer selections. Over a dozen different local beers are on tap and for $15 you can sample up to 6 different beers.
The OB Brew Cup is a beer tasting challenge pitting 16 local breweries against one another to see who has the best tasting beer. Anyone sampling the different beers can vote on which brewery’s beer is their favorite, with the winning beer earning the prestigious OB Brew Cup for the best micro brew.
Outside of the Oktoberfest beer garden area the fun continues for all ages with plenty of food and vendor style shopping on the grassy area by the lifeguard station at the end of Newport Avenue. The food available offers many different options but a favorite is always the Bratwurst because nothing represents the German tradition of Oktoberfest like large, savory sausages and mouth-watering beer.
